      The term ‘ Veterinary’ derived from Latin veterinarius concerning draught animals or having to do with beast of burden. One of the first written records of veterinary medicine was found as far back as 1900 BC in the Egyptian Papyrus of Kahun, according to Vedic literature in ancient India, Shalihotra (2500-1500 BC) the son of a Brahmin sage, is considered the founder of veteirnary sciences. The first Veterinary College was founded by Claude Bourgelat in Lyon, France in 1761, after observing the devastation being caused by cattle plague (Rinderpest). In the present age inportance of veterinary science is increasing considerably, over 30 new infectious agents have been detected worldwide in the last three decades; more than 60 percent of these are zoonotic diseases. In the recent past, India has seen outbreaks of various organisms of emerging and re-emerging diseases in many parts of the country, majority of these are of zoonotic origin. It is clear that veterinary profession plays vital role in safeguarding not only animal health but also human health as well, constant vigil and updating of knowledge is an important tool for every veterinarians to effectively combat these threat that looms over the globe.
